4K and Ultra High Definition

Hardy Productions UK film almost exclusively in Ultra High Definition (3840x2160), with 4K (4096 x 2160) as an alternative option, reducing to HD (1920x1080) as there are few 4K TV sets around and no equivalent to Blu-Ray at the present time. It is nevertheless a cinema standard for digital film, and some clients may see a need for filming in this standard, providing for the future.

To view one or two of our short films in UHD, go to:

or

  • Our Stabilised GoPro page filmed with our GoPro Hero 4 Black UHD/2K/HD camera.
  • We also use our Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 camera which includes filming in VLog-L, to provide footage in High Dynamic Range (HDR).
A word of warning - the definitions of 4K and UHD above are the generally accepted definitions. However, they are not used consistently in the industry. For instance the GoPro Hero 4 Black camera is advertised as 4K, but according to the above definitions is actually Ultra High Definition. Further information on this on Wikipedia.
The frames below show a scaled comparison between standard definition (wide screen), high definition and ultra high definition.

Comparison of HD formats
The picture above shows a comparison in one frame between the various high definition formats that Hardy Productions UK use, depending on our choice of camera.
Our "workhorse" was originally the 1440x1080 anamorphic format which we used to film our short drama "Cry England!" during 2013. In the middle is the full HD format (1920x1080), and on the right is the 4096x2160 4K format which is proportionally wider than the standard HD formats. If you want top quality, it has to be UHD or 4K, but you need the equipment to show it on!
During 2014, we made a short drama "Angel Snow" in the full 4K format. This was a challenge for us but we are pleased with the quality of the resulting film, released in February 2015.
Still from Angel Snow
