Composite Editing

Composite editing opens up doors to create visual effects to mix with actual footage or photographs, or to create visual footage which has been made entirely from "pixels", through such things as particle generation.

This page gives just one example of composite editing using motion tracking.
Tracking on moving film
The picture here (right) is of a scene filmed in 4K to which has been added a screen of moving footage and a title.  This was for a short sequence between films at a film night programme.

To achieve this effect, we motion tracked certain points in the original film (e.g. the points where the cross cables hold the overhead tram wires) frame by frame to provide a stable anchor on which to fix the screen and the title.

The moving screen was created by providing a 3D base behind the inset film, slightly larger than the film and shaped like a TV screen.
HitFilm ScreenThe HitFilm screen (left) shows how the sequence was motion tracked (both in the picture and in the timeline). The timeline shows the motion tracking linked to a single point with varying position and scale.

This composite shot can either be rendered in HitFilm Pro 2017 or imported into another editing programme such as Magix (formerly Sony) Vegas Pro 15, Final Cut Pro and the like.

This is the resulting sequence, fronted by the Hardy Productions UK moving orb produced using particle generation.
